The game of golf is such a huge topic with so many different aspects to talk about that the subject is inexhaustible.

Equipment - what a complete minefield! We are constantly bombarded by the manufacturers with each breakthrough promising the earth. (I used to wonder how the presenter on the Golf Channel was not playing to plus ten instead of a handicap of eighteen as every few weeks he was selling a new product, which has “just cut five shots off my score”).

Golf Course - I think golfers are so lucky to play a game where every course is different, with new views and a totally different feel to each venue. Even your own home course changes its aspect throughout the year – even on a day-to-day basis. Right now in the UK we have vivid winter colours, it’s bitterly cold and the ball is not flying as far as it was in summer / autumn. Foreign trips are very much in vogue with endless spectacular destinations. There are so many other sports confined to a rectangle pitch or field offering little or no difference between venues.

I was coaching at one of our half day clinics recently, had arrived early, and bumped into one of our students in the car park. As we started to chat it soon became clear that here was yet another golf nutter! His garage full of training aids, DVDs and videos and his brain just as crammed, with confusion. It was all too obvious that he was suffering, as so many do, with complete overload of information. Like so many who find themselves going in ever decreasing circles over how to hit the golf ball, he no longer had any idea of what he was supposed to be trying to do! Once upon a time, he had played off a handicap of five. By the time he arrived in the car park that morning, he was seven shots worse off and going nowhere fast…….

This is the kind of story I hear over and over again. The golfer’s mind is in burnout, his body no longer able to respond with any confidence or conviction. It is like having a form of golfing madness and is a scenario that has probably applied to most players at some time during their careers. Logic, control, belief are all history. Long-term sustainable improvement is impossible, when there is continual experimentation going on in the individual’s head and he is listening to different methods and ideas.

Without getting too involved, I meet so many people on my travels who are completely lost with regard to their golf game. It's a real shame when they have spent countless hours and lots of money seeking improvement on something as seemingly simple, as better ball striking. Yet the simple fact is that there are certain basic movements that all good players make. The red herring has been the idiosyncrasies of the top players, the seemingly different swings they possess. They do not have different swings - only individual styles, with their own idiosyncrasies or faults. This creates the illusion of swinging differently. Yet all top players are very close to the correct swing which efficiently delivers energy to the clubhead, as accelerated speed and on the correct plane for accuracy. The idea that there are many ways to swing is at the centre of the confusion and mystique surrounding the game. Stick with us at SWINGBUILD, we will solve the mystery. We will make you a better player, for life - guaranteed!
