PUTTING: The Simplicity - 3min 0sec

we consider the putting stroke to be the simplest form of golf swing, a pure ‘connected release’ i.e. correct mechanics and a free swinging clubhead. On the technical side, the first thing we are told when putting is to simply, ‘rock the shoulders’. This is connection which gives the control. There is no manipulation of hands or arms, the complete arm and shoulder unit moves as one.
It is the simplicity of the movement that allows the golfer to roll the ball consistently in the same direction. The club face has not changed angle and depth control constant. The swinging bit in many ways is more complicated and will be explained elsewhere at length, but quite simply, the muscles of the arms and shoulders should not be involved. This in turn can allow the putter to accelerate with no interference. In other words, there is no ‘hit’ at the ball but a movement has been created which will gather the ball during the course of its swing.
